All women shape their lives around the threat of gender violence, even if they have not been a victim. In countries such as Peru, Thiland and Mexico, around 70% of women have been beaten, 95% of victims of violence in France are female, and in the US battering is the main cause of injury to women. Violence within families is perceived by many to be central to the whole culture's violence. Violence against women serves to keep them subordinate.
