Healthcare for mothers and children in Burkina Faso is limited, although efforts have been made recently to improve this. Measures initiated include adopting a national family planning strategy, improving maternity services and adopting a family legal code. A campaign against excision has also been initiated, with consciousness raised of the associated health risks to women and children. About 70% of women in the country are excised, with the unhygienic, life-threatening operation carried out with a knife and without anaesthetic. A National Committee aims to completely eradicate excision.
