One sign of spring's arrival in New York is the blossoming magnolia tree in front of the Fifth Avenue mansion that Henry Clay Frick built in 1913-14 and now holds the Frick Collection. It is as reassuring as the collection itself, which most people consider a suitable outing for an aunt who has come to town, always the same, each picture in its familiar place.
