MARSEILLES, the leading port in France for cargo throughput, owes much of its status to trade with the Arab world. Imports of oil and gas, much of which comes from the Middle East and North Africa, alone represented almost two thirds of the 91.7 million tonnes of traffic the port handled last year. The region also accounts for about one third of its 10 million-tonne annual general cargo throughput.
