HBO's "Elizabeth I" opens with a scene Bette Davis never had to endure as the queen: a gynecological exam to determine whether the English monarch can bear children.

That sequence establishes the edgy style of this uneven miniseries, which starts Saturday and concludes April 24. In another break with costume-drama tradition, HBO lingers over executions with a grisliness usually reserved for horror films.
