When British biographer Ian Kelly digs into a topic, he digs deep. For his first book, Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Careme, the First Celebrity Chef, he learned to create choux-pastry swans with chantilly cream. So when he took on the life of the legendary late-18th-century dandy Beau Brummell, he didn't stop at the usual library research.
