Rhineland Radicals: The Democratic Movement and the Revolution of 1848-1849.

There are, broadly speaking, three main interpretations of the 1848 revolution in Germany: as a revolution which aimed to bring about national unity; as a social conflict or class war; and, finally, as a modernization crisis. On each account the revolution failed and on each account radical democrats played a marginal role. This spectrum of negative views is now challenged by Jonathan Sperber's excellent study of the revolution in the Rhineland.
