IT WAS a momentous meeting that day late in August 1768 when James Watt decided to visit Matthew Boulton at Soho House in Handsworth: a meeting that was momentous not only for the two men but also for the world.

A Scot from Greenock, Watt's probing mind and mathematical aptitude were enhanced by his deep thinking and determination to apply scientific principles to his enquiries.
