KEVIN Spacey, the Old Vic's artistic director, has landed his theatre in a genuine, glittering crisis for which he must take responsibility. It is a crisis set to run and run - probably until September, when Spacey himself reappears on stage in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten.

The crisis I refer to is not caused by Robert Altman's Old Vic production of Arthur Miller's last play, Resurrection Blues, which is to close a week early on 15 April after a barrage of bad reviews, the early departure of one of its stars, Jane ...
