Abraham Cowley's Davideis, the four-book epic fragment based on the life of the young David before he became King of Judah, has been recognized as the first neoclassical sacred epic in English (Dykstal 95; Greene 366). Thomas Sprat, Cowley's friend, biographer, and executor, identifies Cowley's youthful audacity in attempting such a design while yet a student at Cambridge with his hero's: "he may seem like one of the Miracles that he there adorns, like a Boy attempting Goliah (sic)." (Sprat xxvii). Cowley's project is no less than to remedy the theft of poetry from pagan tyrants ...
