THE moors of Galloway are among the most bleak and forbidding uplands in Britain. This primitive landscape of wind-blasted scree and bogland has hardly changed for centuries.

Even today, it is easy to imagine travellers losing their way here among the rough-hewn paths and animal tracks that wind through hill and moor, and to picture what it must have been like in the 16th century when this same terrain played host to one of the grisliest tales in our island story.
