The United States and the European Union signed into law March 10 a new wine trade agreement that ends more than two decades of haggling over a dispute about winemaking techniques and the use of geographical names such as port, Chablis, and sherry. The agreement, which was finalized in September 2005, allows United States winemakers to export on a long-term basis wines made from various techniques such as cold filtering and wood chip aging that are not allowed in the EU.
