Northern California wineries and growers were understandably unsettled by the news last spring that nursery plants had made their way into Napa from Riverside County carrying uninvited guests--namely, glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) egg clusters. This, and other recent close calls with the potentially devastating vineyard pest, prompted many to wonder if more could be done to tighten up inspection procedures.
