HOW can a nation reasonably celebrate the fourth centenary of its most famous son when that son is Rembrandt, exhibitions of whose work have become all but constant and commonplace in the great museums and galleries of Europe? To this conundrum the answer is inevitably with yet more exhibitions, this year concentrated in Amsterdam, the city of Rembrandt's rise and fall, of prints, of drawings, of paintings pretending to be by Rembrandt as well as those that are wholly autograph, and intriguingly with Van Gogh and, more daringly, with Caravaggio.
