It is well known that Louis-Ferdinand Celine read Shakespeare and that he admired his works greatly--indeed, Celine's own works are rife with allusions to Shakespearean characters and scenarios. According to Nicholas Hewitt, Celine's favorite Shakespeare play, indeed his favorite work, was The Tempest, and Hewitt charts some of the allusions to The Tempest to be found in Guignols Band claiming that the two volumes of this novel are actually modeled on Shakespeare's last play (Hewitt 1999 224).
