In book 4.425-30 of The Dunciad (1743), Alexander Pope satirizes the monomaniacal pursuit of facts at the expense of values by the example of a butterfly hunter who enthusiastically defends his passion before the Goddess of Dulness: 

     I saw, and  started from its vernal bow'r     The rising game, and chac'd  from flow'r to flow'r.
