Accelerator radiocarbon dating of plant-fibre binders in rock paintings from northeastern Australia.

A detailed analysis of two aboriginal rock paintings in north Queensland, Australia revealed notable amounts of natural earth pigments and plant fibers, used as binding materials, in the prehistoric paints. Radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry of the plant fibers indicate dates of 725 plus or minus 111 years and 730 plus or minus 75 years for the rock paintings. The widespread use non-biodegradable plant fibers facilitated the radiocarbon dating of the studied rock paintings.
