The number of shoppers entering stores in the UK was down 4.9 per cent year-on-year and down 11.2 per cent against an already depressed January, according to the Retail Traffic Index (RTI) from research group, SPSL. These are the lowest numbers since the RTI records began in 1998.
It is thought that the dip has been caused by a change in people's spending priorities and a flip in the affordability of consumer or luxury goods against that of the essentials.
