Evangelization and spreading the message of the Gospel were the primary aims of Pope Pius XI's pontificate. His evangelization programs promoted the evangelization of peoples, adherents of established and new churches alike. In addition, Pius XI believed that it was the duty of all the faithful, particularly the clergy and bishops, to ensure the success of the world's evangelization. He especially emphasized the responsibility of the bishops for the missionary activity of the church.
