SUNLIGHT AT NOON TURNS QUICKLY TO DUSK AS the submersible Alvin sinks below the ocean surface. Shafts of light that penetrate the water soon yield to the transparent darkness of the great ocean depths. The descent continues in the blackest of midnights, lit only by splashes of luminescent light from the planktonic organisms disturbed by the submarine's path through the water.
