A study of Richard & William King of Bristol, one of the largest British firms involved in the African trade in the 19th century, is conducted in order to trace the development of Britain's African trade and the business structures that evolved within it. Of specific concern is an analysis of how companies coped with the economic downturn that seriously affected the African trade in the 1880s. Kings was among the few firms that survived the depression during the period.
