Translation theory and practice in seventeenth-century Italy: the case of the French novel. (Considerations on Italian Literature)

From: Symposium | Date: June 22, 1993| Author: | Copyright information

The translation of non-Italian works into Italian during the 17th century became a means of cultural exchange and a way for Italians to reassure themselves that anything that could be expressed in another language could be expressed in their own. Prior to this time only the classics were translated, using proven techniques to turn Latin and Greek into Italian. The translation of modern works gave Italians the opportunity to transfer foreign achievements and make them their own. This all resulted from a sense of European unity and institutionalization of the novel as a literary form.
