Sexual assault is one of the most serious forms of crime, and public opinion on what should be done with individuals convicted of these types of offenses is often highly impassioned and emotional.

In a 1992 Texas case, an offender charged with sexual assault struck an agreement with the court to undergo castration in exchange for a sentence of probation. Although the agreement was never carried out because no surgeon could be found to perform the operation, the case prompted debate about this type of sanction.
