Hostages should stall for time, avoid risky subjects and try to find the intentions of the captor without panicking. A responsible person must attend the call and obtain information when the captor calls up to negotiate his intentions. Agency help should be sought and hostage management teams should conduct negotiations. Parole officers should avoid making home calls to offenders' places as this increases the possibility of their being captured.
