Italian literature has played a vital role in the literary journal Symposium since its first issue in 1946. Scholars of Italian and Italian scholars such as Antonio Pace, linguist Mario Pei and Guido Natali appeared in the first few issues. The Italian presence in Symposium was at its strongest in the 1950s, when nearly half of the journal's 62 Italian-related articles were published. Dante is the leader in appearances, having been written about 15 times in the journal's history.
