FIFTY years ago, funfair crowds were spellbound by its unique feat of engineering. But as traditional rides gave way to the popularity of white-knuckle rollercoasters, Henri Corbiere's ferris wheel was removed from Southsea pier and put into storage.

Now, on its golden anniversary, the world's only "spherical motion" big wheel is to undergo a pounds 10,000 facelift and be given a new home on Merseyside. Saved from the scrapyard by fairground enthusiast Richard Ryan, it is the signature ride of Southport Pleasureland's 2006 season, ...
