Brundtland is expected to be re-elected in the upcoming general election, entering her fourth term with the coalition led by her Labor Party. But she faces the formidable issue of Norway's application to become a member of the European Community.

THE general election on September 13th is the least of the worries facing Gro Harlem Brundtland, now serving her third term as Norway's prime minister and leader of its Labour Party. There is no realistic alternative to a new Labour-led coalition with Mrs Brundtland at its head. The difficult bit will come after the election is over.
