An analysis of the terminology used in merchant banking is presented. The terms are related to the evolution of the merchant banking industry. Three phases were observed in the terminology of merchant banking. The first phase saw the use of the single term 'merchant.' During the second phase which included the First World War up to the 1960s, several terms were simultaneously used. The third phase corresponds to the widespread use of the term 'merchant banker' as well as the American term 'investment banker.'
