A record and analysis of the gas undertakings in England and Wales as well as their geographical spread and incidence of municipal ownership is presented. The study involved an analysis of 400 English and Welsh towns and the developments in the industry, the status of governmental units where these undertakings were located and the causes of municipalization and trends in urbanization over the period 1851-1947.
