With the world bracing itself for the possibility of a deadly bird flu pandemic, scientists say the way we live today means the risk of new zoonotic diseases is constantly increasing. Zoonotic diseases are those that can be transmitted between animals and people.

'The sorts of rate of accumulation we are seeing now with diseases like HIV, Ebola and SARS is too fast over evolutionary time,' according to Mark Woolhouse from the University of Edinburgh, UK. 'That suggests that in modern times, there is something unusual happening,' he said.
