ABOUT THIS PAINTING
This mountain river enabled travelers to go downstream and in an extremely exciting and dangerous way. But this part of the river is a one-way waterway in that people would have had to carry their canoes (portage) around rapids like this one on a return trip. Even then paddling against the current in the deeper parts of the river might be difficult. And yet this was part of the life of pioneers in the north woods of the Adirondack Mountains of New York and in the wilds of Quebec, Canada, until roads were built.
