Radiocarbon dating of prehistoric rock paintings through the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) is a technique which allows the absolute dating of trace amounts of organic matter, incorporated in paints during preparation, with minimum contamination. The AMS dating techniques permit the identification of prehistoric paints, oxalate crusts and films of organic substances. Being a relatively new method, the art chronologists have yet to define standards for sampling and dating of appropriate paintings using the AMS absolute dating processes.
