IN THE PAST FEW DECADES THE PROSE POEM has served as vehicle for some of our most adventurous writing. Historically poised on the margins since its inception--generally credited to Baudelaire in the 1850s--formally walking the tightrope between poetry and prose, the prose poem employs poetic compression but can also take advantage of some of the narrative arguments of prose.
