Just one look at the very pink, very cute cover of the 'tween-pop album "Girl Authority" may cause music fans to ask: What the heck is happening at Rounder Records, the Cambridge company often called America's pre-eminent roots music label?

The song choice only adds to the surprise: Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," Pink's "Get the Party Started" and other pop hits sung in relentlessly upbeat style by nine suburban girls, ages 8 to 13.
