Newcastle City Council leader Peter Arnold is to be praised for having the courage to reveal his views on nationalism (The Journal, March 20). It is not so long ago that the English eyed any kind of nationalism, home grown or foreign, with suspicion. Is Peter Arnold now to be pilloried for downplaying English nationalism in favour of his pride for regional identity?

At last we are starting to take a more balanced view of our history, inclusive of Northumbria. A kingdom existing for 400 years until carved up by England and Scotland deserves to be recognised, when so ...
