Tortoiseshells have been used to decorate veneers since ancient times. The tortoiseshell technique is very effective and imbues a realistic effect when used on small objects such as jewelry boxes and picture frames. A 10-step process involving the layering of paints and glazes in various patters can be followed to attain the tortoiseshell effect. An exotic look can then be projected by the objets subjected to the technique.
