Mar. 20--For most of the past 132 years, the Garden City Hotel has towered over the life of the village that surrounds it.

To one child growing up in Garden City in the early 1970s, the McKim, Mead & White-designed red brick colossus, dominated by an enormous cupola modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia, was an unapproachable icon.

Patrick Smalley, who lived with his six brothers and sisters, parents, grandmother and great-grandmother in a modest house on Prescott Street, on the edge of Garden City, never set foot in the building.
