Introduced into Europe by the ancient Romans, tortoiseshell is a hard, brittle, translucent material of mottled yellow and brown that can be molded under heat and polished to a high enduring luster. The most adaptable tortoiseshell is taken from the carapace of the Far Eastern hawksbill turtle, called the Chelonia imbricata. When a large surface is required, the plates can be joined by heat or pressure; this material can also be successfully tinted or dyed.
