Alternating-current (A/C) motors have been used in Europe for in trains years, and they are beginning to be used in the US. Burlington Northern Railroad in Fort Worth, TX, is spending $675 million on locomotives powered by A/C motors. A/C motors have more pulling power per unit weight than direct-current motors, which are currently used in many trains in the US.
