A horse died in the final race at the Cheltenham Festival yesterday, bringing the total number of animals killed in this year's event to nine, organisers confirmed last night.

Buck Whaley became the latest victim at the racecourse, falling at the end of the four-day festival which has been criticised by animal rights campaigners for the high death toll. Sh Boom - which fell during Thursday's Ladbrokes World Hurdle - had died as a result of his injuries overnight.
