For two years, Capt. Russell Evans waited for the mermaid to return across the street from his home in Norfolk's Colonial Place.
Now, the mermaid is back on the banks of the Lafayette River, waiting for the captain to return.
In the late 1990s, Evans requested and was given a Norfolk mermaid from the city as compensation for some trees that city workers removed across the street from his house.
Evans, 92, a retired Coast Guard captain and a writer, could see the mermaid from the window in his paneled office, where he spends much of his time.
