Arguing that his age needed heroes and hero-worship, Thomas Carlyle said the eighteenth century "was a Sceptical Century; in which little word there is a whole Pandora's box of miseries.... That was not an age of Faith,--an age of Heroes!" (298). Indeed, writers in this period voiced their distrust of great men in history and of heroes in the epic in a way that was rare in earlier or later periods. Dryden, in his Dedication of Examen Poeticum (1693), says of Homer:
