The future for Alaska's Kodiak Island bear population is looking much brighter.
Since a 1991 Outdoor Life story about threats to Kodiak Island National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, fortunes have improved dramatically for the refuge and the world's finest population of brown bears that live there.
The 1.9-million-acre refuge incredibly supports one big bear per square mile, or about 3,000 of the largest grizzlies on earth. In fact, two of the top 50 Boone and Crockett Club record browns were taken on Kodiak during the past two hunting seasons.
