Modernist pioneers from beginning to end; EXHIBITION Albers and Moholy-Nagy: From the Bauhaus to the New World Nick Hackworth Tate Modern ***.

The Evening Standard (London, England) | March 13, 2006 | Copyright

A POIGNANT irony lies at the heart of this thought-provoking exhibition, which brings together the work of two of the great Modernist pioneers, German Josef Albers and Hungarian Laszlo Moholy-Nagy.

Though neither friends nor collaborators, they were contemporaries as teachers at the Bauhaus, the German art school founded in 1919 and closed by the Nazis in 1933. Both were deeply committed to its revolutionary mission to combine the skills of art, craft and industry. It is the story of their belief in Modernism and its eventual evaporation that fascinates most here.
