Modern Swiss literature has crossed national boundaries in terms of choice of them, style and attitude. Swiss writers are influenced by writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jorge Luis Borges and this influence is visible in the shift from realism to surrealism. The Swiss writers seem to be approaching the problematic question of their identity by exploring international themes and styles. There exploration challenges the traditional perception of the fortified and unique Switzerland.
