The protagonist, Fiammetta Bianchini, lost everything in the 1527 siege of Rome by the Spanish. She and her dwarf companion -- Bucino Teodoldo, who serves as the novel's irresistible narrator -- escape to Venice with a locked book of Petrarch's sonnets and their stomachs full of swallowed jewels.
