Ecumenical leader Arie Brouwer dies. (Obituary)

Arie Brouwer, an influential figure in the ecumenical movement who recently headed the National Council of Churches, died October 7 of cancer at his home in Teaneck, New Jersey. He was 58. Brouwer served as general secretary of the National Council from 1985 to 1989, guiding the agency through tough years in which financial and structural considerations forced it to reorganize and downsize.
