Holkham Hall: seriously Palladian

Home to the Earl and Countess of Leicester, Holkham lies a mile or so inland from the north Norfolk coast, to the west of Wells-next-the-Sea.

Thomas Coke, a wealthy country squire, returned inspired from his grand tour of Italy in 1718 and drafted designs for Holkham, with the help of the great architect William Kent; construction started in the 1730s.

The exterior, a rather serious, pared-down form of the Palladian style of the period, in pale ochre brick, is complemented by extravagant Kent interiors. ...
