TWO great Queens of the high seas met for the first time yesterday, with the young pretender paying her respects to her elegant predecessor.

The vast Queen Mary 2 ( pictured in the distance) passed the original Queen Mary - the world's largest and fastest liner when she was launched - at Long Beach, California.

Each ship greeted the other with deafening blasts of their whistles, with the newer vessel towering over the older.
