Both these biographies depend on the chance survival of correspondence. More than 1,000 of Wedgwood's letters to his partner Thomas Bentley narrowly escaped destruction in the 1850s, and Robin Reilly is not the first biographer to draw on what he calls |this great hoard'. But Reilly is the first to combine technological precision (already exhibited in his magisterial history of Wedgwood ware) with a wide-ranging sweep which displays this innovative potter as a phenomenon of the Enlightenment no less than of the industrial Revolution.
